In March 2007 three average Individuals will take on a not so average challenge. In a feat of endurance they will attempt to find their own limits, right here in our own back yard. It will be a test of fitness, will and determination. It is an endeavor that has been dubbed, ‘The Great Run Project.’
New Zealand is a land of change, a nation where the mountains meet the sea, deserts touch the sky and the lush forests block out the sun. At its most spectacular New Zealand holds some of the most awe inspiring wilderness areas on the planet. Wilderness that can only be seen by those who are willing to leave the paved road, leave the comfort of their homes and walk amongst the grandeur. As a tribute to the spectacular cross sections of landscape eight walking tracks have been designated as Great Walks. These multi-day hikes are the pinnacle of the New Zealand outdoor experience. The walks touch every climate zone on the three islands from low lying rainforest to high-mountain passes.
The Great Run Project is all about these diverse landscapes. Our objective is to attempt to be the first team (as far as we know) to run all of The Great Walks, all within the month of March 2007. There are eight tracks in total, varying in distance from the high alpine crossing of the Routeburn, at 32km to the West Coast adventure of the Heaphy Track at a whopping 80km. We will attempt to run each track in a day, without support or assistance. In the 31 days of March we will endeavor to run over 400km, all off road, in whatever weather or conditions we find. This is the same as running just under ten marathons in a month!
